TXT4Life is operated by Canvas Health’s Crisis Connection, which also responds to crisis phone calls for the state of Minnesota. Crisis Connection employs a mix of volunteers and staff who are passionate about providing life-saving intervention.

Prepare and train. To prepare you for interacting with those in crisis via text or on the phone, Crisis Connection offers a five-week training program (8 in class sessions and 2 orientation/observation classes for a total of 40 hours). During the training, you will learn communications skills, crisis intervention, and information mental health issues.

Commit to shifts. A 200-hour commitment per year is expected of all volunteers and interns accepted into this program. This amounts to approximately one 4-hour shift per week.

Crisis Connection Internships for Undergraduate and Graduate Students:

  • Individual supervision with a licensed mental health professional available.
  • A variety of times to volunteer including evenings, nights and weekends.
  • Experience with a wide variety of callers, presenting a wide range of problems and mental health issues.
  • Excellent training in crisis and suicide intervention.
  • Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)
